The Sonic CircumTrack PAUT Scanner – TS-CTS-48

Modular PAUT / UT Scanner for Pipe Weld, Vessel Weld, Circumferential Weld, and Flat Surface Inspection

The The Sonic CircumTrack PAUT Scanner – TS-CTS-48 is a modular manual encoded scanner designed for PAUT weld inspection, UT weld inspection, pipe circumferential weld scanning, vessel weld scanning, flange-adjacent weld inspection, plate weld inspection, and flat surface ultrasonic scanning applications.

The scanner is designed to support stable probe movement, accurate scan positioning, reliable wedge contact, and repeatable encoded ultrasonic data acquisition. It can be configured for carbon steel pipes, stainless steel pipes, non-magnetic pipes, vessels, tanks, and flat plate weld inspection.

The TS-CTS-48 is suitable for use with different PAUT probe and wedge configurations, including A32 series probes, standard weld inspection wedges, dual-probe arrangements, and customized probe holder assemblies.

Product Overview

The CircumTrack PAUT Scanner is developed for inspection applications where controlled scanner movement is required around pipe circumference or along flat weld surfaces. The scanner can be used for pipe-to-pipe welds, vessel circumferential welds, tank and shell welds, fabrication welds, and flat plate welds.

For carbon steel and other ferromagnetic surfaces, the scanner can be supplied with magnetic wheels to provide stable surface holding during scanning. For stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, non-ferromagnetic materials, and non-carbon steel pipe applications, the scanner can be used with a mechanical chain / rope-link holding arrangement. This allows the scanner to maintain stable positioning around the circumference even when magnetic holding is not effective.

The scanner can be supplied in different diameter configurations, including pipe scanning from 3 inch up to 24 inch, extended pipe scanning up to 48 inch, and flat surface scanning.

Working Principle

The TS-CTS-48 CircumTrack PAUT Scanner guides the ultrasonic probe and wedge assembly along the required scan path. During pipe inspection, the scanner travels around the circumference of the pipe or vessel. During flat inspection, the scanner moves along the weld or inspection line.

When supplied with an encoder, the scanner converts movement into distance-based position signals. These signals are sent to the ultrasonic inspection system, allowing the PAUT / UT data to be synchronized with the actual scanner movement.

This encoded scanning arrangement supports:

  • Accurate weld scan mapping

  • Defect position measurement

  • Defect length sizing

  • Circumferential weld inspection

  • Linear weld inspection

  • B-scan and C-scan generation

  • Repeatable inspection documentation

  • Position-based ultrasonic data acquisition

  • Better comparison during future inspection monitoring

Magnetic Wheel Configuration

For carbon steel and ferromagnetic surfaces, the scanner can be supplied with magnetic wheels. The magnetic wheels help hold the scanner on the inspection surface and support stable movement during scanning.

Recommended for:

  • Carbon steel pipe weld inspection

  • Pressure vessel weld inspection

  • Tank shell weld inspection

  • Structural steel weld inspection

  • Horizontal, vertical, or inclined ferromagnetic surfaces

  • Applications where magnetic holding improves scanner stability

Chain / Rope-Link Holding Configuration

For stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, aluminium, and other non-magnetic materials, magnetic wheels will function only as guide wheels and will not provide magnetic holding. For these applications, the TS-CTS-48 can be supplied with a chain / rope-link holding system.

The chain / rope-link arrangement wraps around the pipe circumference and supports the scanner movement around the pipe. This helps maintain scanner positioning and surface contact even on non-magnetic pipe materials.

Recommended for:

  • Stainless steel pipe weld inspection

  • Duplex stainless steel pipe inspection

  • Non-magnetic pipe materials

  • Alloy pipe weld inspection

  • Pipe diameters requiring mechanical holding

  • Applications where magnetic holding is not effective
